Not a Fan, I Guess

Monday, April 20th, 2009

A week or so ago, DH and I were enjoying dinner at a local restaurant/bar. We were seated in the area behind the bar where a crowd of people were watching the Milwaukee Brewer home opener. Now, we’re not baseball fans, so we weren’t paying too much attention to the cheers and groans from the people at the bar. It just added to the atmosphere of the restaurant.

All of sudden, a cheer rose up from the bar area that was so loud, it drowned out our thoughts and any conversation that might have been taking place in our part of the restaurant. It was obvious that the Brewers either pulled off a spectacular play or they won the game. We later learned that they beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3. Hurray, hurray for the home team! Eventually, the cheers died down and everyone returned to their meals….except for one angry woman.

A few exclamations could still be heard from the next room, indicating that the avid fans were still excited about the home team win. DH and I were quietly eating and discussing the week’s events when a woman stomped past with her young daughter. She was apparently coming from the bathroom and heading back to her table, a short distance from ours. She had a very angry look on her face and as she passed our table, she was heard to exclaim, “They need to shut up, that’s what I know!” She was shooting angry looks through the shutters to the bar area, as if to dare them to come over and confront her for her angry words.

“Not a Cubs fan, I guess!”, my husband said under his breath to me, and I couldn’t contain my laughter. Thank goodness the woman didn’t hear this, or there would have been heck to pay for sure. She wasn’t about to directly confront a room full of men, but she might have been tempted to try and take down my man.

It makes me wonder why she was in a sports bar/restaurant if she didn’t appreciate the crowd’s enthusiasm, especially for the home opener? And what kind of example was she setting for the young girl that she accompanied back from the bathroom?
